Who We Are

Eliette Singleton-Semedo

I’m a multidisciplinary artist working across photography, writing, content creation, and cyanotype.

My cyanotype practice brings art and marine science together through one of my primary subjects: macroalgae. Using locally collected seaweed and naturally available sunlight, I create original blue-and-white prints that preserve the intricate forms of kelp and other marine plants.

Through this work, I bring the beauty and fragility of underwater forests into view, making an often inaccessible landscape something people can experience, appreciate, and live with.

The Process

  • Preparing

    Before specimen collection

    I choose my paper for printing. Always cotton, always archival. Chosen for its ability to hold the image and not overpower it. Then coated with cyanotype solution and left to dry slowly overnight- in total darkness.

  • Noticing

    Beginning Underwater

    While diving, swimming, or beachcombing I’m paying attention kelp’s condition, age, movement, and structure. I look for intact fronds and growing tips that illustrate kelps remarkable geometry

  • Composing

    An ephemeral form; made enduring

    The composition already exists in the specimen. I look at the kelp knowing it has experienced innumerous forces, taken innumerous form. I simply follow the form that speaks to me. Preserving natural curves, overlaps, and irregularities. Compositions are exposed in sunlight for only a few minutes.
